The first eight months of 2019: growth continues

Development overnight stays Metropool Amsterdam:

The total number of overnight stays in the entire Metropolitan area (including Amsterdam) increased by 13.1% in the first 8 months of 2019 compared to the same period in 2018. The number of overnight stays booked by international visitors increased more than the number of Dutch overnight stays (+ 14.1% vs 10.0%). With the exception of January, the increase in the number of overnight stays in the entire Metropolitan area (including Amsterdam) is higher than 10% every month in 2019.

Overnight stays in the Metropolitan area (excluding Amsterdam) increase more strongly in the first 8 months of 2019 than overnight stays in Amsterdam, this is mainly caused by Dutch overnight stays that rise more strongly in the region than in the city (+14, 9% vs + 4.2%).

Over the current year, overnight stays in Amsterdam increased the most in the 2nd quarter compared to the same period last year (+ 12.8%). In total, the total number of overnight stays in Amsterdam rose by + 11.7% in the first 8 months compared to the same period last year. Foreign overnight stays (+ 13.2%) are rising faster than Dutch overnight stays (+ 4.2%) in Amsterdam.

The number of leisure overnight stays (+ 14.7%) is increasing faster than the number of business overnight stays (+ 5.4%) in the first 8 months of 2019 compared to the same period in 2018.
In August, leisure and business overnight stays increase almost proportionally.

Overall there is an increase in the total number of overnight stays of visitors from the core markets that we have identified. Overnight stays by visitors from the United Kingdom increase the most in the first 8 months of 2019 (+ 18.4%).
Amsterdam records a larger percentage increase in overnight stays than the average of European cities, with the exception of overnight stays by visitors from France.
The growth in the share of overnight stays of visitors from the United Kingdom (+ 18.4%) and Italy (+11.4) in the first 8 months of 2019 is the strongest in 9 years. All core markets show the highest number of overnight stays year to date ever.

Development of leisure visits to Amsterdam:

July was the best month for both museums and attractions in 2019. In total, they rose 4.2% and 6.0% in the first 8 months of 2019 compared to the same period last year.
In 2019 there were fewer sea cruise passengers than in previous years. This is probably partly due to the newly introduced day tourist tax for cruise ships that started in 2019.
